GROW-ADVANCED-MANUFACTURING@ec.europa.eu |
Manufacturing SMEs in Europe and beyond are under increasing pressure today for adopting advanced technologies and products in order to stay competitive and successfully participate in local and global supply chains. The question is straightforward: Are they ready to do so, and if not, which are the main barriers and obstacles that prevent them to make this step forward? Can SMEs see the potential benefits for improving their productivity, and increasing their production capacity and innovation capability? Are their managers ready to invest and change the structure and culture of their company to respond to the new challenges of digitalisation and resource efficiency? How can policy actions support them to take the right decision? What programmes, initiatives and support services for manufacturing SMEs exist today in EU countries, and what are the lessons learned so far?
The workshop will bring together stakeholders from different Member States to debate on the readiness factors of SMEs, as well as the barriers and implications of up taking advanced manufacturing technologies and products. In particular, intermediary support organisations that are currently providing specific services to manufacturing SMEs will provide information about their experience and lessons learned in working closely with manufacturing SMEs across EU countries. Taking into account the expressed views and the key recommendations from this debate, the objective will be to draw some concrete policy actions that could be implemented under COSME and H2020 in 2016--2017, with a view to help Member States leverage their efforts in this area or to be inspired by it and launch similar support schemes in their country.
It is expected that an audience of about 50-70 stakeholders attend the workshop, composed of manufacturing SME managers, intermediary organisations providing specific support services to SMEs in this area, cluster managers, representatives from European SMEs associations, and policy makers.
